JOB SUMMARY
Possesses managerial responsibility for all phases of a battalion operation. Directs and coordinates battalion staff in fire suppression, emergency medical and related disaster efforts. Performing duties in accordance with Civil Service Commission rules, and goals, and department policies and procedures, incumbent exercises judgment in the organization, discipline, training and evaluation of battalion staff. Takes command at fires and emergencies involving property loss and life threatening situations and must be able to make immediate decisions under these circumstances. Work is performed in alternating 24-hour shifts and incumbents may be frequently exposed to hazardous conditions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Provides direction to battalion staff in accordance with division objectives. Maintains discipline and morale; evaluates staff performance.
· Plans and supervises the training of staff in emergency control; conducts simulation exercises; conducts safety inspections.
· Takes command at the fire scene; controls and directs the physical environment surrounding an emergency scene.
· Performs other administrative duties such as preparing special reports, planning for new equipment and apparatus, promoting public relations and keeping routine records.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Works under the general supervision of the Deputy Fire Chief.
Exercises supervision over professional, technical, or support staff within the department, either directly or indirectly through supervisors, as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRMENTS
College-level courses or graduation from an accredited two-year college or university with a degree in a related field.
Ten or more years of progressively responsible related experience including at least two years as a combat Captain.
Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
EVAP/Defensive Driving license required.
Emergency Medical Technician and Incident Safety Officer licenses preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
Considerable knowledge of fire suppression techniques and peripheral fields.
Extensive knowledge of management and supervision techniques.
Ability to communicate with department employees and the general public both orally and in writing.
Ability to analyze problems and develop solutions under emergency conditions involving life threatening situations.
Ability to remain sensitive to the fire service operations needs of the community and make appropriate resource adjustments.
