SHOP AND WAREHOUSE
MECHANIC
REPORTS TO: SHOP FOREPERSON
MISSION:
To maintain vehicles and mechanical equipment owned by the City of Ellensburg.
SUMMARY:
Maintain and repair vehicles and equipment. Perform diagnostic procedures and repairs. Ensure that other departments are able to perform their jobs more efficiently.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
All of the following are to be performed while adhering to City of Ellensburg operational policies, safety rules, and procedures.
Test, Service, and Repair Vehicles and Equipment:

Operate diagnostic instruments; hand, electric, and air driven tools
Repair brakes, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, air, exhaust, and chassis
Provide emergency field assistance and repair to disabled equipment and vehicles
Cut and weld metal; fabricate parts, frames, and related items
Perform body repair and related work or arrange to send out

Test and adjust or replace parts
Schedule preventive maintenance
Analyze and inspect equipment and vehicles
Determine most cost effective maintenance or repair

Purchase parts and supplies for repair and maintenance
Assist in budget development to provide adequate inventory

Research cost and maintain adequate parts
inventory

Maintain C.N.G. equipment; vehicles and station
Repair damaged hoses and parts
Install new equipment

Assist when other departments need additional manpower
Repair gates, hand railings, and other miscellaneous items
Maintain loading dock
Fabricate and install ADA equipment

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Forklift - City training. Air brake repair - 1 year experience or training. Commercial Driver's License.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
(A) Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics; Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding; price trends and grades or quality of materials and equipment; Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities; Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
(B) Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
(C) Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures; Ability to maintain effective accounting procedures; Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors and the public.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Valid State Driver's License, or ability to obtain one.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; personal computer, calculator, phone; mobile or portable radio.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold.
The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
